THE AREA
The Cooley peninsula is in county Louth,on the east coast of Ireland, just over 1 hours drive from both Dublin and Belfast. It is an area of outstanding beauty and steeped in history. The medieval heritage village of Carlingford is the centre of much that happens on the peninsula and is well worth a visit,it has many pubs, restaurants, hotels,B&Bs and a tourist office. The mountains and hills dominate the area with many forestry plantations with Carlingford lough and the Irish sea bordering the area.Because of the many different types of wild habitat,in such a small area, its not surprising that it holds a wide range of biodiversity making it an ideal base for some natural history photography.Native mammals include Fox,Badger, stoat,Irish mountain hare,Pine marten, otter and red squirrel.while some of the noteworthy birds include Buzzard,Jay,Cuckoo, long eared owl,Woodcock,Raven,Merlin,Peregrine falcon and Crossbill.Notable butterflies and moths include emperor moth, fox moth, elephant hawkmoth, poplar hawkmoth, green hairstreak, small copper, wall brown, silver washed fritillary, dark green fritillary, holly blue and small heath.Notable damsel and dragonflies include Keeled skimmer, common hawker,Black darter,Emerald damselfly,4 spotted chaser and Emperor dragonfly.
During the winter many migrant birds arrive to escape the harsh weather further north expect Brambling,Twite,Fieldfare,Redwing,Whooper swan,Pale bellied brent geese,Snow bunting, waxwing and many more
