Mark Carmody-Co.Cork. wildlife photographer and co author of the book, shorebirds of Ireland "thank you for the photography outing yesterday i really enjoyed it.we are planning another morning soon" Monica Ralph- Co.Louth "I enjoyed the recent tour immensely,well planned and your hospitality was very much appreciated.I will be back for more" Joe mc Ardle-Co.Louth "many thanks for a great day taking photos of the red squirrels,your patience and organizational skills are very much appreciated and made the trip memorable" Joe Curtis-Co.Dublin THE AREA The Cooley peninsula is in county Louth,on the east coast of Ireland, just over 1 hours drive from both Dublin and Belfast.It is an area of outstanding beauty and steeped in history.The medieval heritage village of Carlingford is the centre of much that happens on the peninsula and is well worth a visit,it has many pubs,restaurants,hotels,B&Bs and a tourist office.The mountains and hills dominate the area with many forestry plantations with Carlingford lough and the Irish sea bordering the area.Because of the many different types of wild habitat,in such a small area,its not surprising that it holds a wide range of biodiversity making it an ideal base for some natural history photography.Native mammals include Fox,Badger,stoat,Irish mountain hare,Pine marten,otter and red squirrel.while some of the noteworthy birds include Buzzard,Jay,Cuckoo,long eared owl,Woodcock,Raven,Merlin,Peregrine falcon and Crossbill.Notable butterflies and moths include emperor moth, fox moth,elephant hawkmoth,poplar hawkmoth,green hairstreak,small copper,wall brown, silver washed fritillary,dark green fritillary,holly blue and small heath.Notable damsel and dragonflies include Keeled skimmer,common hawker,Black darter,Emerald damselfly,4 spotted chaser and Emperor dragonfly. During the winter many migrant birds arrive to escape the harsh weather further north expect Brambling,Twite,Fieldfare,Redwing,Whooper swan,Pale bellied brent geese,Snow bunting,waxwing and many more ![]() News
28th APRIL 2012 FIELDTRIP/WORKSHOP
05th April 2012 Our next field trip/workshop titled Birds & Mammals on the shore will take place on saturday 28th April 2012.We will be meeting at the Ghan house in Carlingford for breakfast (included in the price)at 9am before heading off for the day.April should be a good time for various migrant birds coming through along with the residents.We shall also be on the lookout for Otter which can be found on the shores of both Dundalk bay & Carlingford lough,learn how to look for the signs that otters are using an area.Hares can sometimes be seen in the fields along the shore and seals bask on rocks offshore at low tide.We will run a number of moth traps the previous night and should have a number of different species for a spot of macro photography during the day. Carlingford lough with the mournes in the back drop and the cooley mountains should provide some landscapes for those that wish to avail of the opportunity.We will finish off the day with dinner(again,included in the price) in the restaurant of Ghan house.

GARDEN BIRD WORKSHOP 10th MARCH
28th February 2012 Following on from our very successful february workshop we are running a garden bird workshop on the 10th of march 2012.Based in Ghan house, with their mature gardens and pond,make this an excellent venue.We will commence at 9.30am and will demonstrate how to set up a garden bird feeding station and the use of props to get more natural looking shots.we will also look at the best camera settings for bird photography,
composition,exposure etc.Learn to id the visitors to your garden and how to attract a greater variety of birds.We will have hides set up for the day for you to use which will enable you to get really close to the birds.A slideshow and question & answer session will follow inside ghan house before finishing up with afternoon lunch in the restaurant.we should be finished around 4pm ![]() S
